NEWBORN SESSION FAQs

what newborn sessions do you offer?

I offer 3 types of newborn sessions: Lifestyle Newborn, Fresh 48, and Just Born.

What is a lifestyle newborn session?

A lifestyle newborn photo session is a natural, relaxed way of documenting your baby’s first days at home. Typically taking place 1-3 weeks after birth, but can be done if baby is a bit older as well (just keep in mind an older baby may not be asleep during the session). Instead of posed studio setups, these sessions focus on the real, intimate moments—snuggles on the couch, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, siblings interacting with their new baby, and all the little in-between moments that make this season so special.

The goal is to capture the love, connection, and everyday beauty of your growing family in a way that feels authentic and timeless. These sessions typically take place in your home, using natural light and familiar surroundings to create meaningful, heartfelt images, but can also take place outdoors in a beautiful tree-lined grass field.

What is a fresh 48 session?

A Fresh 48 session is an unposed, natural way to document your family with your new baby 24 to 48 hours after birth, typically in the hospital or at home. It’s all about capturing those raw, intimate first moments with your new baby and their precious newborn details—wrinkly fingers, first yawns, the way they curl up on your chest.

What is a just born session?

A Just Born session is a natural, intimate photo session that takes place immediately after birth (within 1-2 hours), that captures the raw, emotional moments of meeting your baby. Held in your hospital, birth center, or at home, this session focuses on the immediate postpartum- skin to skin bonding, first time latching or bottle feeding, the newborn exam, weight and length measurements, and so much more. These sessions are perfect for moms who want a "birth photography" type of session to capture the experience, but don't want a photographer around for labor or the moment of birth.

what should we wear?

*does not apply to just born or fresh 48 sessions*

Soft, neutral tones and simple, comfortable clothing work best. I recommend light, natural colors that complement your home and keep the focus on your baby. Flowy dresses, cozy knits, and bare baby toes always look beautiful! I’m happy to help with outfit guidance to ensure you feel your best

what if i don't want an in-home session?

I offer sessions outdoors, in various rental studios, and in-home for a more intimate, cozy feel. If you love the idea of bright sun-lit photos or golden sunlight filtering through the trees, we can plan for an outdoor session at sunrise or sunset. If you prefer a relaxed, lifestyle approach, we can document your journey in the comfort of your home. Studio sessions offer a clean, sleek, and modern look as well as themed, decorated sets depending on the time of year. It's completely up to you!

do i need to clean my house for an in-home session?

Having a newborn is enough as it is, I do not expect you to have a spotless home for a photo session! I love to use beautiful natural light during sessions, so we will always be near an illuminated window. Having a small tidied space near a window is all I need. Any flat surfaces that will be in the photos should ideally be free of clutter (tables, night stands, etc) and sometimes things can just be moved out of the way instead of being cleaned. If needed, I can help tidy small areas for the best photos, but truly—don’t stress. This session is about love, connection, and real life, not perfection.

can siblings and pets be included?

Absolutely! Including older siblings and even furry family members make any session even more special.

what if my baby is fussy during the session?

That’s completely normal and to be expected! We take breaks as needed for feeding, soothing, and snuggles. My approach is completely baby-led, there’s no pressure for “perfect” moments, just beautiful real life moments.

what if my baby has acne or peeling skin?

Baby acne and peeling are extremely common in newborns. I embrace capturing your baby just as they are, however, I do gently retouch blemishes that may be distracting while keeping their skin looking natural. Any editing beyond this will require an additional retouching fee.

do you use props or do posed newborn photos?

My style is all about natural, unposed moments that capture the beauty of your baby just as they are. Instead of props, I focus on real connections—their tiny hands in yours, the way your baby curls up against your chest, the love in your eyes as you look at them. If there are any props you have that you'd like to include, I would be happy to do my best to implement them in your gallery. I focus on real moments of connection, family portraits, solo shots of baby and their little newborn details.

how should i prepare for the session?

There’s very little you need to do! Just keep your home comfortably warm for your baby, and if possible, open up curtains to let in natural light. Have baby dressed, fed and soothed - or do this at the start of the session so I can capture those interactions with baby! I always recommend avoiding tight underwear and clothing on the day of the session to prevent marks on your skin and removing any chipped nail polish.

what should baby wear?

Simple is best! Think soft neutrals or solid colors. A classic nesie, a matching set, a cozy swaddle, or even just a diaper keeps the focus on your baby. I love capturing tiny hands, feet, and all those delicate newborn details, so nothing covering hands or feet is needed.

do you offer both color and black-and-white images?

Yes! I include a mix of both in your final gallery. Some moments just feel more timeless in black and white, and I love using both to tell your story beautifully.
